Ed Tatum

Ed has been playing guitar and singing for over 50 years. Beginning with the British Invasion music of the 60s, he continued with the rock genres of the 70s and 80s before branching out into American Folk and Irish Pub Tunes. He has played in a number of rock bands and with the Irish American Pub Band, Uisce Beatha, in Richmond, Va.

In addition to playing solo, Ed currently plays with The Pints (Americana with deep celtic roots), as a duo with Heidi White, and with The Dirty Windows (John Prine tribute band).

Duo

Heidi White and Ed Tatum step out of The Pints for a duo!

Heidi is a Columbus native and has played and sung music most of her life. She started her first band in the 4th grade and hasn’t stopped playing since. She has worked as an acoustic single and duo and has sang and played keys with a few rock bands.

Bluegrass music got Heidi back to her choral music roots. She began playing bass and singing as an original member of Grassahol. Heidi still plays bluegrass with some of her former bandmates in Wood Pickers and Timbrewolves.

After persistent begging from the band and encouragement from other musician friends, Heidi took the opportunity to join The Pints in 2022 and started a crash course in Irish music.

The Pints

Along with Ed and Heidi, Matthew Dixon and Jeff Kanel are The Pints.

The Pints play the traditional pub tunes along with jigs and reels in a non-traditional way. Brought up on American folk, bluegrass, and rock and roll, we hear many of the same tunes and song structures across multiple genres. The Pints play the traditional tunes in a way that honors the genres that followed and evolved from this root. We also play some of our favorite Americana. We are energetic and have fun with the crowd.

The Pints | Jeff Kanel

Jeff Kanel has been playing violin since the age of seven. Suzuki trained, he played through high school, focused on classical repertoire, eventually playing with the Cleveland Symphony Youth Orchestra in the late ‘80s.

While Jeff always enjoyed classical music, he was enthralled with a Tommy Makem performance at an Irish Festival. The unique ornamentation and lilt of Irish tunes had stuck with him ever since.

Fast forward 25 years… Jeff dusted off his violin, determined that he would finally play Irish music. Jeff began performing locally with native Irish talent in Ballybeg Banter. It was during this period that he also learned mandolin, guitar, and bit of bodhran.

In 2019, Jeff joined The Pints where he performs on mandolin, fiddle, and vocals. His musical experience now spans Irish, French Canadian, Bluegrass and American folk music.

The Dirty Windows

Dirty Windows is comprised of Columbus Folk Music Society (CFMS) members Renilda Marshall, Mike Hale, Brian Szuch, and Ed Tatum. These seasoned entertainers have been performing John Prine songs since the late 70s, and began presenting Prine Tributes in 2019. They are delighted to share the magic of this prolific songwriter.

Widely recognized as one of the most influential songwriters of his generation, John Prine was known for humorous lyrics about love, life, and current events, as well as serious songs with social commentary and songs containing recollections from his own life.

Prine won four Grammy Awards out of 13 nominations, as well as a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Prine’s music influenced Johnny Cash, Bonnie Raitt, and Roger Waters, and is seen in the works of younger artists he mentored including Jason Isbell, Amanda Shires, Brandi Carlile, Sturgill Simpson, Kacey Musgraves, Margo Price, and Tyler Childers.

We lost John to Covid on April 7, 2020.

Performances

But for my talented daughter, I wouldn’t have a web page at all. As I get older, I find myself becoming my father from a technology standpoint. And, I really want to spend my time on the music rather than hovering over some portion of a webpage hoping a magic icon will appear!

So, the best way to see upcoming performances is to go to my Facebook site and The Pints Band website.
